Amazon
The Amazon is a destination where the journey and the landscape are almost inseparable. Rivers are the highways here, winding through vast areas of rainforest where travelling overland can be difficult or impossible. Exploring by small ship allows you to move through the heart of this extraordinary river system, using smaller expedition boats to leave the main channels behind and venture into tributaries, creeks and flooded forest. But not every Amazon cruise offers the same experience. In the Peruvian Amazon, voyages often explore the waterways around the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, where smaller boats head out in search of wildlife and visits can introduce you to communities living along the rivers. The Brazilian Amazon brings a different sense of scale, with the immense Amazon River, wider waterways and routes that can combine rainforest exploration with places such as Manaus. Where you travel – and how the ship explores once it gets there – makes a considerable difference. Much of an Amazon journey is about slowing down and learning to look. Wildlife doesn't necessarily present itself in wide-open landscapes; it can be concealed among dense vegetation or high in the canopy
